If you've been reading our blog the past few weeks, you've probably noticed a few posts about what we're doing in our garden and how we're doing it (1, 2). But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, I thought I'd take a moment to list a few reasons why we're gardening.
In no particular order:
1. It's an opportunity to learn something new.
2. It's something we can enjoy doing together.
3. It's an excuse to be outside.
4. It's a relatively inexpensive hobby.
5. In fact, we're hoping it will help supplement our grocery bill.
6. It's fun.
7. It's challenging.
8. It's an excuse to play in the dirt.
9. It's a chance to see and celebrate new life.
10. It's a way to further understand the abundance of agrarian imagery in the Bible.
To those of you who are fellow gardeners, why do you garden? To those of you who aren't, why not?

I would add to that list - to interact in community.
This past year, my wife and I gardened at the apartment complex we live in. We did some container gardening (tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, asian eggplant, several herbs) and then also weeded out a large section of the existing landscaping at the complex that was overgrown and messy and attempted to grow zucchini, yellow squash, spaghetti squash alongside more cucumbers, beans, basil and rhubarb. We also planted pretty flowers to tend while waiting for the veggies to grow. All of this brought many opportunities to interact with our neighbors as we were literally 'in their way' while working along the paths from their cars to their apartments. This year, we have obtained a space in a local P-patch so that we can take those interactions even further - inviting our community group to join us in serving the community alongside our P-patch group! It's going to be fun!
That's awesome, Tim! Which P-patch did you choose? We'd love to come by and see what you've got growing.
There's a P-patch that's potentially going in near us at 35th and Barton. If it does, we'll probably plant a few things there, too, so we can get to know the green thumbs in our area. We're also hoping to have a harvest feast toward the end of the summer and invite all our neighbors over.
